Zoophycus

Now I'm leaning towards Zoophycos. Can anyone confirm if it is zoophycos, and help with the morphology of this specific find? I'm under the impression that zoophycos morphology changed throughout the ages, and I'm trying to reverse ID the age of rocks I found it in since the geological maps of my area are extremely vague and lack detail..

The Zoophycos ichnofacies and its main components, Zoophycos isp., Phycosiphon incertum and Chondrites isp. has been related to marine environments of low energy and oxygen. This situation is very common in shelf environments of the past, the most important oil source rocks and/or unconventional reservoir. The Early Cretaceous Palermo Aike ...Paleontological survey in the remote Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve in Alaska led to the discovery of lobed Zoophycos from the lower Tahkandit Limestone (informally named Sandstone unit), an interval characterized by grayish-green glauconitic sandstone and conglomerate of coastal origin. The studied Zoophycos consists of a lobate skirt-like spreite bounded by a marginal tube. The Zoophycos group of trace fossils is common in Carboniferous to recent marine strata and sediments, and is a common component of ichnofaunas in the Visean and Namurian stages of England and Wales. A review of new and published records indicates that it is often present in limestones and sandstones of Chadian to Arnsbergian age. Thereafter it is less common, and restricted to clastic rocks.

Trace fossils can be assigned to five associations from nearshore to offshore environments (namely Skolithos, Diplocraterion, Altichnus, Palaeophycus, and Zoophycos associations). They clearly illustrate the different colonization phases of the benthos with increasing marine influence.Profound changes in both marine and terrestrial biota during the end-Triassic mass extinction event and associated successive carbon cycle perturbations across the Triassic-Jurassic boundary (T-J ...X-ray radiographs were used to identify Zoophycos spreiten (Fig. 2, Fig. 3).These X-ray radiographs (Fig. 2) were produced at the Institute of Geosciences, Kiel, following the method described by Bouma, 1964, Löwemark and Werner, 2001.Plastic boxes were pushed into the half cut of the core, and the sediment slabs were cut out with a nylon string and placed directly on the X-ray film bags ...

The ichnogenera present belong to the Zoophycos assemblage, which commonly is developed in fine-grained sediments deposited in low-oxygen environments Ekdale and Mason, 1988, Bromley, 1996, Savrda et al., 2001. These observations are consistent with uniformly anoxic conditions during deposition of the black shale …The deposits contain aboundant and diverse marine fauna such as fusulinids, small foraminifers, brachiopods, corals, crinoids, and gastropods. Bioturbation is also distinguishable in some microfacies. Higher up in the section, thin- to medium bedded burrowed mudstones and wackestones appear and show low-energy deeper water Zoophycus ...The Zoophycos ichnofacies is reported for the first time from the Lower Jurassic (Toarcian) deposits of Algeria. The trace fossil-bearing strata in the Ksour Mountains, northwestern Algeria, are an alternation of fine-grained limestones and marls. The assemblage is characterised by its low diversity, consisting of eight ichnospecies (Chondrites intricatus, C.Middle Kinniny Limestone; the trace fossil Zoophycus. One hundred and sixty metres west of the pool and 4 m south of the path (which lies here on a low postglacial raised beach) lies the Middle Kinniny Limestone which is 1 m thick and displays Zoophycus markings in abundance in the top 15 cm. Six ichnofacies, varied in expression, are ... ….
